Heated Gutter Cables and Ice Dam Prevention in Fond Du Lac, WI

Ice dams form when snow on the upper roof melts, runs down, and refreezes at the cold eave. The ice builds a ridge that holds back more water, which can back up under the shingles. Frozen gutters and downspouts make it worse because the meltwater has nowhere to go.

Heated gutter cables keep a channel open. A heat cable runs along the bottom of the gutter and down the inside of each downspout, so melt has a path off the roof. On the roof edge, cable is often laid in a zigzag pattern above the eave to break up the dam line.

There are two main kinds. Constant-wattage cable puts out the same heat along its length. Self-regulating cable puts out more heat where it is cold and less where it is warm, and it is the safer choice for most homes. Either should plug into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet, and a thermostat or snow sensor saves power by only running the cable in icing conditions.
